Hiatal hernia

Any time an internal body part pushes into an area where it doesn’t belong, it’s called a hernia.
The hiatus is a gap in the diaphragm – the muscular wall that separates the chest cavity from the abdomen. Normally, the esophagus connects to the stomach by passing through the hiatus. In a hiatal hernia, part of the stomach pushes through this gap into the chest and bulges.
