Diverticulitis is a gastrointestinal disease that occurs with infection and inflammation in the wall of the colon. Diverticula are the inflamed pouches or sacs that form on the intestinal wall and are the primary cause of the disease. Although most people with this condition recover completely with timely diagnosis and treatment, emergency treatments and sometimes surgery may be necessary if the disease and infection worsen.
